God created all humanity in His Image and I understand Bishop Talbert.
I am not suggesting we move on. You did not answer the question.

If a religion is not of Christ how does it have salvation in Christ?
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Better grammar: a religion not of Christ can not have salvation in Christ

But let me qualify my statement. In Matthew 7:21 Jesus clearly tells those who think they’re His followers that they were not. And in Matthew 25:31-46 He tells those who never knew they were His followers that they indeed are.
Just as we involuntarily sin, we are able to involuntarily follow Christ. There are people who follow Christ who are not even aware of it.
Comment by Varsitydawg on October 28, 2009 at 5:32 pm
OK. Do you agree with your version of the statement? Bishop Talbert does not.
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Please read my previous qualifying statement.

It is possible for those who think they are following Christ to indeed not be. And it is possible for those who never said they were, to actually in deed be following Christ.

There is no way to measure ones faith, either positively or negatively. You can not say to someone that they are following the path b/c we do not know – we can barely know if we ourselves are following the path.
Similarly you can not tell someone else that they are not following the path. At any given second you can be one or the other. At the change of a heartbeat you can be following, or you can be turning away.

St. Ephraim of Syria has a prayer. At the end of it we say
“Grant me to see my own sins and not judge my brother, for Thou art Blessed unto Ages of Ages.”
It is far more important for us to see the true nature and depth of our sin than to try and see the sin of our neighbor.

Are you assuming at least some of the sheep in Matthew 25:33 don’t know they are following Christ? Where does scripture say that?
Comment by Varsitydawg on October 28, 2009 at 6:09 pm
1 John 2:3-11 will answer that question.

How does this affect what I have been saying? In fact it supports my claims. Those who say they know Him but do not keep His commandments is a liar.
Do you keep God’s commandments? Do you know Jesus Christ?
We are walking on very dangerous ground here.

We are off on a rabbit trail. Back to the issue: Bishop Talbert believes God is inclusive of other religions including those that have heard the Word and reject the biblical Jesus. Where does he get that?
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 7:08 pm
You claimed earlier that you understood Bishop Talbert. It is obvious now that you do not.
We were not on a rabbit trail, we were defining terms. Defining terms is something most Protestants never like doing b/c unfortunately most of them do not even know what the terms mean themselves.
How can you say you follow Christ if you don’t know what it MEANS to do that?
How can you say someone does not follow Christ if you don’t know what it MEANS to follow Him?

Is that your definition of what it means to believe in Jesus? . . ?

posting problems
I believe:
that Jesus Christ was God in Flesh, that he died and rose again and that I love him with all I have.
that I confess my sins.
that I keep the commands of God
that I love others.

We learn through the greatest commandments that loving our neighbor as ourselves that loving humanity and loving God are not at all entirely two different prospects, but are identical. This is also apparently in Gen 1:26, for when we love another, we love the Image of God inside that person, and thus we love God.
If someone who never knew Jesus or God, loves another human being as though that person was himself, then that person is loving God whether he or she knows or believes it.
Comment by Varsitydawg on October 28, 2009 at 8:56 pm
There is only one person who has met that standard, Jesus Christ. All others are described in Rom 3:10-12.
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 8:58 pm
And your point being? Just because we don’t measure up doesn’t mean we don’t do it.
God knows what we need before we ask for. Yet we are still told to pray.
I don’t understand your point.
Comment by Varsitydawg on October 28, 2009 at 9:09 pm
The point is man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. Faith in what? Jesus Christ. Bishop Talbert is telling people that they can be justified apart from faith in Jesus Christ. Get it?
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 9:10 pm
But what does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ??
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
Comment by DopoNotte on October 28, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Also Talbert never said those ppl were going to God. He never even said they were or were not right with God. He never once said those people were justified!
He said it wasn’t up to him to make that decision.
